Beni

The Tacanas, people who live in the jungle of northern Bolivia, build like they had done since centuries, rafts of trunks to go from one place to another. In the rainy season, when the water of the rivers is ascending, it happens, that they go overboard with all their package. This is told "MASHAQUIPE" in their language.

Only a few families live in the jungle all over the year. Most of them live in the near town Rurrenabaque where their children can go to school and they hope to earn their money at tourism. They are really experts as tour guides, because nobody knows the jungle better than the people who grew up there.

The project MASHAQUIPE should help to conserve their culture and environment and give them a earning to improve the situation of their life and enable the education and apprenticeship of their children. They have the only tourism office in Rurrenabaque which is organized by the indígenas themselves and that's profits are exclusively used to improve their situation. They offer tours to the jungle and to the pampa, but it is also possible to practice their arts and crafts, to live their culture and to enjoy their typical dishes.
